We will consider the periods principal political, social and cultural aspects: the causes of the French Revolution; the shift from constitutional monarchy to Republic; the relationship between politics and religion; the invention of a new republican political culture; counterrevolution and Terror; the Directory; Bonaparte's rise to power; the Napoleonic Empire; the nature of war during the Empire; the Restoration; and the Revolution's legacy in France and beyond today.
